Most parents know children’s dental health basics: brush regularly, reduce sugar intake, limit snacking, and get plenty of calcium and Vitamin D. At Vanguard Dental Group in Derry NH, we can think of three additional tools to help prevent cavities in children:
- Fluoride supplements
- Oral rinses
Dental sealants are applied by in our office during routine checkups. Made from plastic and other dental materials, sealants bond to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, protecting the pits and fissures from decay. Sealants are not a substitute for brushing, but they’re an added layer of protection for young teeth.
Fluoride supplements help strengthen still-forming teeth before they come in. You can get a prescription from your pediatrician or ask us at Vanguard Dental Group. There is one caveat, however: if you have fluoridated water, your pediatrician may counsel against taking additional fluoride in supplement form.
If your son or daughter is taking fluoride supplements, is an oral rinse redundant? Actually, no. Fluoride supplements help strengthen teeth that are still forming, but a fluoride rinse helps teeth that have already come in. Make sure you pick one specifically formulated for children. Products labeled as a mouthwash are usually intended only for breath-freshening and may not contain fluoride.
Regular brushing and flossing remain the best way to prevent cavities, but these additional tools will strengthen teeth and help the cause. At Vanguard Dental Group in Derry NH, services include pediatric dentistry, and specialties like dental implants. Schedule your next checkup with us today.
